Building partnerships that strengthen Alberta and its partners

Apr 25, 2017

Microsoft is widely recognized as a global powerhouse when it comes to cloud-based software, and local startup Clinisys Inc. created a cloud-based technology that drew the powerhouse to Alberta.

On Wednesday, April 12, Deron Bilous, Minister of Economic Development and Trade, joined Alberta Innovates CEO Laura Kilcrease and a host of others to announce and congratulate Clinisys EMR Inc. and the Microsoft Corporation on their partnership.

Benefitting patients

The partnership will see Clinisys’ cloud-based emergency medical record (EMR) software deployed through Azure, Microsoft’s cloud platform. This virtual setup will do away with the need for any physical infrastructure where the Clinisys EMR is used. The transition from physical servers to the Azure platform and Microsoft Dynamics hosting services will also provide enhanced security for patient information.

Timely and effective access to patients’ medical records will help health care professionals do their work more quickly and efficiently.

Alberta Innovates role

Alberta Innovates strategically supports innovation and entrepreneurship through a number of different programs, and Clinisys was able to take full advantage of three of these:

  1. Health Product Demonstration Pilot Program (currently, the Clinical Demonstration Program) in 2013-2014,
  2. Voucher Program in 2013, and
  3. Product Demonstration Program in 2016.
Through these combined programs, Alberta Innovates has invested $426, 000 along with other trade and investment services from Minister Bilous’s department. But today it’s not those programs that are important, it’s the results. Today we’re here to celebrate and share those early results that Clinisys has gained by working with Microsoft.Laura Kilcrease, Alberta Innovates CEO

A win-win for partnerships

Clinisys will have the opportunity to reach customers on a world-wide basis using Microsoft sales channels, but Microsoft will also benefit by allowing Clinisys growing global customer base to leverage a scaleable, secure cloud platform. That combination means both firms win. This is the type of meaningful partnership that Alberta Innovates encourages and supports. It’s when we work together that we can do great things for Alberta, and today is the beginning of the next phase of great things.Laura Kilcrease, Alberta Innovates CEO
