NRCan Announces Funding for Clean Technology Project in Edmonton

The Honourable Tim Uppal, Minister of State (Multiculturalism) and Member of Parliament for Edmonton-Sherwood Park, on behalf of the Honourable Greg Rickford, Canada's Minister of Natural Resources and Minister for the Federal Economic Development Initiative for Northern Ontario, today announced an investment of $1 million under Canada's ecoENERGY Innovation Initiative (ecoEII). The funding will support the InLine Dewatering of Oil Sands Tailings research and development project, which will conduct research into reducing water and energy use when extracting bitumen from Canada's oil sands.

GE Launches Global Ecomagination Innovation Challenge to Reduce GHG Emissions in Canada's Oil Sands

GE announced the launch of an up to CAD$1 million ecomagination open innovation challenge to help accelerate technology development in Canada's oil sands. The Innovation Challenge will target two of the biggest opportunities to reduce green-house gas (GHG) emissions in the oil sands: new uses for waste heat and improved efficiency of steam generation.

Energy Efficiency Studies Identify the Best Opportunities for Greenhouse Gas Reductions in Alberta

Results of the groundbreaking comprehensive assessment of energy consumption and opportunities to mitigate greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions show that more than eighty per cent of the electric energy used in the province comes from fossil fuels (coal and natural gas). Enerkem launches world’s first full-scale waste-to-biofuels and chemicals facility

Enerkem (www.enerkem.com) officially inaugurated its first full-scale municipal waste-to-biofuels and chemicals facility in Edmonton, Alberta. This is the first commercial advanced biorefinery to exclusively use municipal solid waste to produce advanced biofuels and chemicals. This industry breakthrough is a collaboration between Enerkem, the City of Edmonton and Alberta Innovates - Energy and Environment Solutions.

Silvacom video "Measuring Ecosystem Services" wins GOLD at Graphex 2013

Congratulations to Silvacom on winning gold at the Graphex 2013 Awards. These biennial awards celebrate the best designs across Canada in all mediums. More than 800 applications were submitted across 16 categories. According to a panel of international judges, the Silvacom video animation "Measuring Ecosystem Services" was best of 10 finalists in the digital category. The award was presented at the Graphex Awards Gala held May 9, 2014 at MacEwan University's Robbins Health Learning Centre.  Silvacom developed the video as part of its work on the Bio-Resource Information Management System (BRIMS) project for Alberta Innovates Bio Solutions, which is now in its second phase. The video was created to describe ecosystem services and why they're important to society.

CALGARY - A recent study shows that following best practices in fertilizer use under the Nitrous Oxide Emissions Reduction Protocol (NERP), can increase yields and increase returns for Alberta grain farmers by as much as $87 per acre. The study, produced by the George Morris Centre, is part of the Canadian Fertilizer Institute (CFI) Farming 4R Land program. The program is managed by CFI in partnership with Alberta Innovates Bio Solutions with funding from the Climate Change and Emissions Management Corporation. Read the report here.

Congratulations to winners of Mission Impulseible, a student food development competition

Postsecondary student teams from across Alberta were invited to develop a wholesome and delicious snack food for kids using Canadian pulses and to promote how the product provides nutritious solution(s) to consumers and industry. In total, six teams submitted entries with two teams from the University of Alberta and four teams from NAIT. AI Bio provided funding and judging support.

First place went to a U of A team's  "Pulse Pops" made with chickpeas, black beans, peanut butter and chocolate. See Pulse Pops video here and photo here.

DuPont Pioneer Receives $1 Million Grant to Advance Economically Important Crops in Alberta

RED DEER, Alberta, March 20, 2014 - Alberta Innovates - Bio Solutions and Alberta Crop Industry Development Fund Ltd. support early maturity corn research. DuPont Pioneer received a combined total grant of $1 million from two Alberta innovation support organizations for the development of shorter season corn hybrids and expansion of corn cultivation in Alberta. Alberta Innovates - Bio Solutions (AI-Bio) and the Alberta Crop Industry Development Fund Ltd. (ACIDF) will each invest $500,000 over a five-year period. AI-Bio and ACIDF Ltd. strive to fund investments that will deliver economic, environmental and social benefits to farmers across Alberta.

The potential for Energy Efficiency Improvements and Greenhouse Gas Emission Reductions in Small & Medium Forestry Enterprises in Alberta

This study identifies energy efficiency opportunities in the forestry sector as a way to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, reduce the load on the province's energy grid, and reduce energy costs.

Working with the Western Centre for Economic Research (WCER), at the University of Alberta, AI-EES commissioned a survey of small and lumber mills across Alberta to:

  • Determining the potential for energy efficiency and GHG reduction opportunities in these mills
  • Identifying initial steps for exploring energy conservation measures for lumber mills
  • Providing recommendations on developing a broader energy management program targeting the Alberta forestry sector. 

This project reflects AI-EES' commitment to helping Alberta become a global leader in energy sustainability and ensure Alberta has the best environmental technologies for a sustainable economy.

U of A spin-off company game changer for renewable fuels industry

A University of Alberta spinoff company commercializing technology developed by a Faculty of Agricultural, Life & Environmental Sciences researcher is introducing the next-generation of renewable fuels. Almost 10 years in the making, Forge Hydrocarbons is commercializing a patented conversion process developed by David Bressler that takes agricultural feed stocks like animal fat, such as beef tallow, crop seed oil and even restaurant grease, and converts them into 'drop in' fuels.

Funding Awarded to Detect E.Coli in Food Processing Facilities

Calgary...Genome Alberta is pleased to announce on behalf of our funding partners the Alberta Livestock and Meat Agency, Alberta Innovates Bio Solutions, Genome Canada, Genome Quebec, and the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture and Food and the Ministry of Rural Affairs, the results of our collective funding competition for the rapid detection of pathogenic E.coli. Each of the two successful applications will receive $500,000 in new funding. The successful projects will leverage this investment with additional funding to bring the total investment to $1.6 million over the 18 month life of the projects.
