Alberta Bio Future

Alberta Bio Future, Research and Innovation

Program update

We received 93 submissions (letters of intent) for project funding during the first stage of the selection process for the Alberta Bio Future (ABF) Research and Innovation sub-program.

Letters of intent were reviewed and assessed by the Selection Committee for alignment with the program purpose and objectives, and evaluation criteria. These are outlined in the program guidelines.

Twenty-eight applicants were invited to submit a full proposal, and of those, 16 were approved for funding. Projects are underway.

About this program

The bioeconomy holds great promise for Alberta, a province abundant in sustainable biomass, advanced infrastructure and highly qualified personnel. This is an emerging field where there is much still to learn about the science and how to turn concepts into new industrial bioproducts and technologies. As such, discovery and developmental research are strategic priorities of Alberta Bio Future (ABF), our flagship bioindustrial program.

The ABF Research and Innovation sub-program was launched Sept. 16, 2015, with a total of $4.5 million in available funding.

Funding amounts for successful projects were determined on a case-by-case basis, commensurate with quality and scope of project.

The focus is on developing bioindustrial products and bioindustrial technologies using biomass. Projects will be in the following categories:

  • Biomaterials
  • Biochemicals
  • Biomass characterization with a direct application to the bioindustrial sector.

Project activities include basic or applied research, or pre-commercial development.

Information on biomass characterization developed in the projects will be made publicly available to advance Alberta’s bioindustrial sector.
