An Edmonton biofuel company is a big step closer to commercializing its process for production of renewable, drop-in transportation fuels. Alberta Innovates played a key role in supporting this disruptive technology invented in Alberta. AI provided the original funding for development and scale-up to demonstration scale.

SBI BioEnergy Inc. has signed a deal with Royal Dutch Shell, granting Shell exclusive development and licensing rights for SBI’s biofuel technology. SBI has a patented process that can convert a wide range of waste oils, greases and non-food-grade vegetable oils into lower carbon drop-ins for diesel, jet fuel and gasoline.

The SBI process is unique. It creates no emissions, generates no waste and costs less than other alternative fuels.
