Alberta Bio Future

Alberta Bio Future, Product and Technology Commercialization

Program update

We received 44 proposals (letters of intent) for project funding during the first stage of the selection process. Letters of intent were reviewed and assessed by the Selection Committee for alignment with the program purpose and objectives, and evaluation criteria. These are outlined in the program guidelines.

Twelve applicants were invited to submit a full proposal, and of those, four were successful in receiving funding. The projects are underway.

About this program

The bioeconomy holds great promise for Alberta, a province with abundant biomass, advanced infrastructure and highly qualified personnel. By taking advantage of emerging opportunities, the Alberta Bio Future (ABF) program aims to help diversify our provincial economy. It is also focused on increasing sustainability and reduce our carbon footprint by promoting use of our renewable resources.

This ABF Product and Technology Commercialization sub-program was launched July 6, 2015, with a total of $3 million in available funding.

It supports projects that focus on:

  • New bioindustrial products and bioindustrial technologies that will be commercialized within three years.
  • Pilot or scale-up work, prototype development.
  • Research – however, only as an activity required to directly support commercialization, i.e., market research, research to gain certification or implement codes or standards, etc.

Requests for projects funds were set at a minimum of $250,000 and a maximum of $1,000,000.

Information on biomass characterization developed in the projects will be made publicly available to advance the bioindustrial sector.
