The Energy Storage Program helps enable broader utilization of intermittent renewable energy. By developing energy storage technologies Alberta will be well-suited for the current interconnected electric system as well as modernizing and enabling Alberta’s future decentralized grid.
Alberta has some of the best wind and solar energy resources in Canada. Developing these resources offers a great opportunity to reduce provincial greenhouse gas emissions and provide long-term sustainable energy. Our goal is to support the development of energy storage technologies that will result in cost-effective energy storage and widespread deployment of renewable electricity.
One or more grid-scale energy storage facilities operational by 2020 will enable deployment of energy storage capacity equivalent to 2.5 per cent of Alberta’s generation capacity by 2030.
