Kirk Rockwell and his team develop and manage funding programs in support of research and innovation activities within Alberta’s post-secondary institutions. The primary focus is on the development of Highly Qualified and Skilled Personnel and research in the high-tech platform technology areas of nanotechnology, information and communications technology and ‘-omics’ (life sciences tech including genomics, proteomics, metabolomics, glycomics and others.)
Kirk specializes in project management, relationship building, research and development funding, environmental consulting, and developing environmental and innovation policy. His main activities include stakeholder engagement, project and people management, strategic planning, government liaison and partnerships and funding program oversight.
Kirk has close to nine years of experience in supporting research and innovation initiatives in Alberta and more than six more in environmental consulting related to the province’s oil and gas sector. He has spent time in the private sector in a technical and management capacity, managed his own business and worked with many types of stakeholders in government, academia, industry and the general public.
Highly adaptive and flexible to changing environments, Kirk is an adept communicator with a strong capacity to broadly understand a wide variety of both technical and non-technical subjects. He thinks strategically and is able to work within almost any team environment.
Kirk has a B.Sc. in Environmental Science from Royal Roads University and an MBA in Innovation and Entrepreneurship from Northeastern University. He’s family oriented with two young daughters he enjoys spending all his free time with.
