Informing wood bison conservation through innovative landcover and microhabitat mapping and modeling in Alberta

The Informing Wood Bison Conservation in Alberta project, funded by Alberta Innovates, aims to advance habitat mapping and monitoring for Wood Bison across northern Alberta. Using cutting-edge tools such as lidar, high-resolution imagery, and data science, the project will identify key habitat features and model how bison use the landscape. This work will provide better, more detailed information to guide conservation planning, land-use decisions, and species recovery efforts. Delivered in collaboration with government, academic, and conservation partners, the project represents a major step toward developing long-term, data-driven solutions to support Alberta’s wildlife and ecosystem management.
