Reyo Medtech: Lighting the Path from Patient Need to Innovation

Looking for answers as a patient can sometimes feel like searching in the dark, hoping for a light at the end of the tunnel. For the nearly eight million Canadians living with chronic pain, representing approximately 20 per cent of the population, finding effective treatment options can be a long and frustrating journey.

Reyo Medtech (formerly Beam Medical) is a Calgary-based medical device, research, and technology company that transforms challenges faced by patients with chronic pain into new treatment options. Together with its sister companies, Beam Radiology and , it connects patient care, clinical research, and medical device development, creating a clear path from real-world healthcare needs to new solutions that improve patient outcomes.

Lower back pain is not only one of the most common causes of disability, but it can diminish a person’s quality of life and affect their ability to work. Diagnosis is often difficult because there is more than one place on the spine that can be the root cause. One culprit is the basivertebral nerve (BVN), which carries pain signals from damaged vertebrae endplates (often caused by prolonged disc inflammation) – injuries that don’t respond well to traditional treatments, such as spinal fusion (Smirniotopoulos et al., 2024). Enter BVN ablation; a minimally invasive procedure that uses radiofrequencies to create a localized thermal lesion, which permanently stops the pain signal from reaching the brain.

In 2025, Reyo Medtech received funding from the Alberta Innovates Accelerating Innovations into CarE (AICE) Concepts program to advance the use of BVN ablation as a durable treatment for back pain, in addition to commercializing innovative technology to help diagnose chronic lower back pain. The AICE Concepts program supports innovators as they move across the four main areas of commercialization: Product development, business readiness, product-market fit, and regulatory compliance.

It was a natural fit. Reyo Medtech's approach to identifying patient needs, validating solutions through research, and bringing new technologies to market mirrors Alberta Innovates' focus on helping Alberta innovations move from idea to impact.

A beam in action

The BVN Ablation project is one example of Reyo Medtech’s continuum in action: transforming clinical insights into a potential new treatment option and hope of an improved quality of life for patients living with chronic lower back pain. Support from Alberta Innovates helped Reyo Medtech advance promising technologies toward commercialization and the patients who need it.
