A Portable DNA Species Detection Device for Conservation

The specific aim of the project was to develop technology for the identification of caribou (Rangifer tarandus) from DNA found in fecal samples. The field work component focused on collecting and verifying the technology and spending time with various stakeholders to understand the requirements of the device for varying needs and levels or expertise. The technology distinguishes between caribou and other Cervids in real-time, which are often challenging to differentiate in the field from fecal pellet characteristics alone.
