Home > Impact > Funded Projects > Process Development for Transforming Alberta’s Asphaltenes into High-value Carbon Fibers
The overall objective of this project is to develop an economically and environmentally viable process that would enable valorization of Alberta's Asphaltenes - the organic molecules found in bitumen - into high-value carbonfibres to create alternatives to PAN and pitch-based carbon-fibre technologies. In Phase I, this project will focus on understanding the key challenges and addressing the knowledge gaps to design a clear pathway to manufacture carbon-fibre from Alberta's Asphaltenes.
