April 21, 2026
Winning government contracts can be a challenge, but AI is helping businesses find opportunities and make the most of them.
Did you know local governments spend over $2 trillion on contracts every year? That’s enough to buy every one coffee in North America for decades.
While these contracts are available to the public, winning them can be a challenge; opportunities get buried in non-searchable data and waiting for proposal requests (RFP’s) to open can leave companies feeling rushed.
Ontopical AI uses artificial intelligence to monitor over 200M government pages to detect opportunities and provide businesses with context that helps them craft relevant, persuasive proposals. The platform gives businesses an advantage by delivering curated opportunities 6-12 months ahead of traditional RFPs, and offers information on contracts, budgets and scope (Ontopical AI).
One example of how this platform works with businesses is through their CoPilot AI, Oliver. Oliver will scan both text and video to provide businesses with contract opportunities and relevant information applicable to their business and potential contracts. The AI will also answer questions about the contract bid and give the exact location of the information on the page, from video timestamp to paragraph.
Ontopical AI was recently acquired by SOVRA, a North American public procurement technology partner that has branches in Montreal, Ottawa and Calgary. This acquisition has grown to almost 40 full-time roles in Calgary, AB, many of them related to AI.
Ontopical AI received early support from Alberta Innovates through early R&D, commercialization associate programs and funding from Platform Calgary, which de-risked development, helped attract private capital and positioned Alberta to become a leader in procurement intelligence.
Many have said that AI would take jobs; turns out, its helping businesses find them. Talk about AI that works for Canadians. Literally.
