CardiAI is getting straight to the heart of health innovation

Heart failure affects hundreds of thousands of Canadians, and diagnosing and monitoring the condition can be challenging, especially when patients have other health issues. But what if the ability to test your heart health was in the palm of your hand?

CardiAI is an Alberta-based medical device and healthcare technology company focused on improving patient care through rapid diagnostic testing and artificial intelligence.

 With the support of Alberta Innovates, CardiAI has developed a suite of technologies aimed at improving how heart failure is detected, monitored, and managed. Alberta Innovates’ Micro-Voucher, Industry R&D Associates, and Accelerating Innovations into CarE (AICE) Validate programs helped the company develop rapid diagnostic tests for important heart failure biomarkers, validate multi-biomarker testing technology, and create AI-powered tools that can automatically interpret test results.

For example, in 2023, CardiAI developed a simple test strip, handheld reader, and mobile app to measure biomarkers linked to heart failure, providing faster results than relying on more complex and expensive laboratory testing.

CardiAI continued to build on this foundation by expanding its work through the AICE Validate Program to develop AI-enabled cardiovascular monitoring technologies that combine diagnostic testing, remote monitoring, and data analytics. BPAro, the company's ambulatory blood pressure monitoring platform, is one example of this technology which is now used in more than 50 clinics across Alberta and supports over 1,000 patient tests each month. By bringing together rapid diagnostics, continuous monitoring, and artificial intelligence, these technologies help clinicians detect cardiovascular disease earlier and make more informed treatment decisions.

This work earned CardiAI the 2025 ASTech Award for Outstanding Innovation in Health, Medical and Pharmaceuticals, recognizing the company's leadership in AI-powered cardiovascular diagnostics and monitoring.

Together, CardiAI and Alberta Innovates have helped move health technologies from development and validation toward real-world clinical use, improving how heart disease is detected, monitored, and managed.

CardiAI is now developing the next generation of cardiovascular health technologies through projects such as BPAro Active+ and Lateral Flow Assay (LFA) Image Analysis. BPAro Active+ uses AI to monitor key health measures, including blood pressure, heart rate, ECG, and oxygen saturation, while LFA Image Analysis helps clinicians quickly and accurately interpret heart-biomarker tests.

Funding partnerships like these help healthcare providers make faster, better-informed decisions while supporting earlier intervention, improving patient outcomes, and more efficient use of healthcare resources. By moving innovative technologies out of the lab and into the hands of clinicians and patients, they're helping deliver better care straight to the hearts of Albertans.
