May 4, 2026
Raising capital can feel like a race against time. From the moment the first government grant or investment is received, the clock starts ticking down to zero as early-stage ventures compete to show their value to private sector investors. However, what happens when an academic researcher develops cutting-edge technology but doesn't have the entrepreneurial expertise to get the tech where it needs to go?
The UCeed Founder Matching Program (FMP), powered by Alberta Innovates, is a pilot program that matches academic researchers and founders, or Ideators, who are developing emerging technology that have the potential for industry-wide impacts, with experienced business leaders, referred to as Builders, who are filling the gap in entrepreneurial knowledge by providing operational guidance. Builders use their experience to help academics make the transition to commercialization, while creating long-term employment opportunities and promoting investment in early-stage startups within the first six months of entering the pilot program.
Launched in July 2025, The Founder Matching Program (FMP) aims to match 16 pairs of Ideators and Builders over an 18-month period. By bridging emerging tech and entrepreneurial expertise, early-stage startups can nurture new talent, hire staff and grow in the right direction.
Taylored Biotherapeutics is an Alberta-based company working to advance microbiome-based therapeutics for mental health and is one of the latest examples of how FMP supports the transition from research into scalable ventures.
At a critical stage in the company’s journey toward commercialization, Ideator Dr. Valerie H. Taylor, MD, PhD, a leading researcher in gut–brain axis science at the University of Calgary, was matched with Ted Fleming, Founder of Partake Brewing, through the Founder Matching Program.
Fleming’s experience building and scaling a consumer wellness brand, along with his expertise across manufacturing, distribution, fundraising, and go-to-market strategy, made him a strong match to support Taylored Biotherapeutics through the transition from academic research to a commercially viable company—strengthening its path from scientific discovery to real-world application.
Since being matched through the program, Fleming has been working closely with Dr. Taylor to help shape the company’s commercialization strategy, supporting its development within Alberta’s entrepreneurial ecosystem and positioning the company for future growth and impact in mental health innovation
“This program is very helpful for us in identifying key areas where growth is required and to fast-track critical tasks. It has really accelerated our path to market,” says Dr. Taylor.
Early feedback from the ecosystem has suggested that the Founder Matching Program is helping close the gap between research and the market, fast-tracking commercialization out of post-secondary institutions.
While the clock is always ticking for early-stage Alberta startups, UCeed’s Founder Matching Program is buying time and giving them a boost, helping unlock high-potential research and transforming emerging tech into opportunities across Alberta.
As of April 2026, the Founder Matching Program (FMP) has accepted 10 Ideators and has paired 8 of them with world-class builders, advancing their transition from research to an investor-ready company. FMP has openings for 6 more Ideators until the end of the year and is currently accepting applications.
