The Alberta Lighthouse Initiative is accepting expressions of interest from Health Service Delivery Partners (HSDPs) until June 29, 2026. Submissions must outline a priority need that aligns with one of the competition’s two overarching innovation challenges that focus on prevention, early detection and management of key cardiometabolic conditions.

The program connects Alberta-based HSDPs with Innovation Solution Providers to co-develop, implement and evaluate evidence-informed care models for cardiometabolic conditions. Selected projects will receive up to $500,000 for a term of up to two years.

Innovation Solution Providers will be invited to respond to HSDP expressions of interest later this year. “Chronic diseases affect a significant number of Albertans and place a growing strain on individuals, families, and the health system. This initiative helps address root causes, expand access to supports, and ensure that more Albertans have access to preventative care.” says Justin Wright, Minister of Primary and Preventative Health Services

Improving patient outcomes

The Alberta Lighthouse Initiative was established through a public-private partnership between the Government of Alberta, Novo Nordisk Canada Inc. and Alberta Innovates. It takes inspiration from Denmark’s Lighthouse Life Science partnership, which combines the strengths of the public and private sectors to improve health outcomes and create economic opportunities in the life sciences sector. Since it was introduced in 2022, the Danish program has seen several successful projects.

The Alberta Lighthouse Initiative hopes to achieve similar success. By prioritizing ready-to-implement solutions, the program advances evidence-informed care models that can be adopted in real-world settings to help accelerate improvements in the prevention, detection and management of cardiometabolic conditions.

“Alberta’s strength in healthcare innovation is undeniable,” says Mike Mahon, Chief Executive Officer of Alberta Innovates. “The Alberta Lighthouse Initiative looks to push that world-class expertise further, while advancing the provincial priority to strengthen collaboration in healthcare to scale innovation.”

Cardiometabolic conditions are among the most common chronic conditions in Alberta, accounting for a significant portion of health system demand in the province. The Alberta Lighthouse Initiative aims to reduce pressure on the health system while supporting better overall health outcomes for Albertans.

Enabling innovation

After HSDP expressions of interest have been evaluated against the program’s challenge and eligibility criteria, Innovation Solution Providers will be invited to respond with targeted solutions.

Select Innovation Solution Providers will be invited to collaborate with HSDPs to implement and rigorously evaluate novel care models over a period of up to 24 months.

“Partnership is essential to turning innovation into action. Novo Nordisk is proud to work alongside partners to help move practical, evidence-informed solutions into real-world care for people living with cardiometabolic conditions in Alberta,” says Adam Marsella, Head of Patient Access & Public Affairs at Novo Nordisk Canada Inc.
