We have long believed in the power of artificial intelligence and machine learning, and have backed this up with nearly two decades of support to Rich Sutton and to the Alberta Machine Intelligence Institute (Amii). We have provided substantial long-term funding to support Dr. Sutton’s work – $8.8 million for him to serve as iCORE/AITF Chair in Reinforcement Learning and artificial intelligence from 2003 to 2018. In addition, since 2002, we’ve invested more than $35 million in funding to the Alberta Ingenuity Centre for Machine Learning and its successor, Amii. We believe it’s important for Albertans to have a greater understanding of how public research and innovation dollars are managed on their behalf. And we know this early stage support for what was once considered a nascent technology is now beginning to pay dividends for Alberta. We at Alberta Innovates are so pleased to see Rich Sutton named to the Royal Society. It’s the honour of a lifetime and we congratulate him, the University of Alberta and Amii.
