Mechanical Characterization of Pipe Steel Materials Exposed to varying levels of Hydrogen Concentration

This project aims to assess how exposure to hydrogen affects the mechanical properties of commonly used pipeline steel grades in Alberta (X46, X52, X60, and X65), with the goal of enabling the safe conversion of existing natural gas pipelines for hydrogen transport. Researchers will evaluate hydrogen embrittlement, test the effectiveness of polymer liners as protective barriers, and use advanced modeling to predict long-term material behavior. The outcomes will provide critical data to support infrastructure resilience and promote the sustainable expansion of hydrogen energy in Alberta.
