Building Alberta’s Energy Future

Alberta Innovates is building Alberta’s energy future through funding programs and applied research focused on the production, deployment and use of hydrogen and CCUS technology across the economy. Our applied research affiliates, InnoTech and C-FER, provide applied research, testing and engineering expertise across the province, through our experts and specialized facilities.

Let’s talk hydrogen

Alberta Innovates is a proud sponsor of the 2025 Canadian Hydrogen Convention and will be attending, along with our applied research affiliates InnoTech and C-FER.

Visit us at Booth #318 to learn about how we are supporting the industry and working together to follow the hydrogen roadmap to a successful, hydrogen-fueled future.

Hydrogen Centre of Excellence

Alberta Innovates is home to the Hydrogen Centre of Excellence, a funding program, testing and service facility, and forum for facilitating partnerships to de-risk hydrogen technology development.

  • Hydrogen fuel analysis.
  • Innovation and certification – hydrogen gas and gas blend standardization.
  • Specification testing – to ensure delivered hydrogen meets industry needs.
  • Advanced analysis – sample collection from points of delivery.
  • Research and development – developing the next iteration of hydrogen testing equipment.

2025 Strategic Conference Sessions

Bridging the Gap between Private and Public Funding

Date Time Room Number
April 24, 2025 9:20 a.m. – 10:05 a.m. Salon 8 – Alberta Innovates Room

Panelist: Bonnie Drozdowski, Vice President, InnoTech Alberta

Despite public funding initiatives such as the US bipartisan infrastructure bill, the EU’s hydrogen strategy and Canada’s investment tax credits, aiming to unlock private capital, project developers face slow subsidy rollouts, few FIDs, insufficient infrastructure, and the funding required to make projects economic.

Attendee insights:
Delegates will learn about the barriers to private investment in hydrogen and strategies to overcome them, ensuring the growth of a sustainable hydrogen economy in Canada.

This panel features: Nirmal Gnanapragasam, Principal Scientist, Canadian Nuclear Laboratories; Chris Reid, Chief Executive Officer, Ekona Power; Guillermo Freire, Senior Vice-President, Mid-Market, Export Development Canada; and Bonnie Drozdowski, Vice President, InnoTech Alberta.

Description:
InnoTech Alberta and C-FER Technologies, supported by Alberta Innovates’ Hydrogen Centre of Excellence, are advancing hydrogen integration in the global energy system. Martin Huard and Brian Wagg will provide an update on new testing capabilities and programs aligned with Alberta’s Hydrogen Roadmap. Key projects include hydrogen production from thermal oil reservoirs, natural hydrogen exploration, applications for solid carbon from methane pyrolysis, converting natural gas infrastructure to hydrogen, and validating pipeline leak detection systems for hydrogen-natural gas blends.

Description:
InnoTech Alberta’s 2024 study highlights global advancements in hydrogen pipeline testing and identifies gaps and opportunities for Canada. By developing its own testing infrastructure, Canada can address unique challenges and enhance its hydrogen pipeline capabilities, positioning itself as a leader in the global hydrogen market.

Description:
Enbridge Gas is evaluating the Enbridge Gaz Quebec network for hydrogen blending with natural gas, focusing on the performance of cast materials like ductile iron and gray iron. Due to limited data on hydrogen compatibility, they partnered with C-FER Technologies to conduct a phased study, starting with information gathering and material testing.
Description:
This presentation covers the incorporation of methane pyrolysis-derived carbon into polymers and Alberta-produced pitch-based materials to create precursors for carbon fibres, aiming to reduce costs and improve quality. By using low-cost feedstocks, the study investigates the impact on filament diameters and mechanical properties of spun carbon filaments and carbonized fibres, highlighting the cost-saving potential of methane pyrolysis carbon.
