CITI-Canada training

The Collaborative Institutional Training Initiative–CITI–has partnered with the Network of Networks (N2) to provide an online Canada-specific education program.  The ACRC endorses these courses as part of its recommended training opportunities. CITI training is free of charge through our partner organizations.

The CITI-Canada Training Guide outlines all the steps required to begin your training. Courses are currently available in:

• Health Canada Division 5 – Drugs for Clinical Trials Involving Human Subjects
• Good Clinical Practice (GCP)
• Responsible Conduct of Research (RCR)
• Biomedical Research Ethics
• Social and Behavioral Research Ethics
• Transportation of Dangerous Goods (TDG/IATA)
• Others – institution specific

These courses are GCP and Health Canada compliant, and the following pharmaceutical companies and clinical research associations have accepted them as evidence of training:

Abbott, Amgen, AstraZeneca, Bayer, Bristol-Myers Squibb, Johnson & Johnson, Lilly, Novartis, Pfizer, Pharmanet, Roche, Sanofi-Aventis andTransCelerate Biopharma.

You can complete the online course at your convenience, stopping and starting any time. Upon completion of the course, you can print a certificate for your records.

It is important to note that completion of the CITI training does not replace study-specific training.

Claiming continuing education credits

Please keep copies of the training certificates for your records to demonstrate qualifications and ongoing training for those who require it. (e.g. sponsors and Health Canada.)

Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons

Physicians who complete the CITI-Canada Courses can create a personal learning project (PLP) and record two credits per hour under Section 2: Planned Learning of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada’s Maintenance of Certification (MOC) Program.  Alternatively, physicians can record 0.5 credits per module under Section 2: Scanning.

No certificate of participation or accreditation or payment of administrative fees via CITI/University of Miami is required to record the MOC credits. The College of Family Physicians of Canada

Physicians who complete the CITI-Canada courses can claim Mainpro-M2 on a one (1) credit per hour of participation basis.  No certificate of participation or accreditation, or payment of administrative fees via CITI/University of Miami is required to record the Mainpro-M2 credits.  For more information contact The College of Family Physicians of Canada.

SOCRA

The Society of Clinical Research Associates (SoCRA) accepts documentation in continuing education programs for recertification if the program is applicable to clinical research regulations, operations or management, or to the candidate’s clinical research therapeutic area.  Members can claim 4 hours of Continuing Education (CE) credit for the Good Clinical Practice program.  For the other courses, please refer to the website.

ACRP

The Association of Clinical Research Professionals (ACRP) accepts documentation of candidate participation in continuing education courses.  The courses must be offered by acceptable providers for maintenance of certification, and must be applicable to Clinical Research Topics or Therapeutic Topics.  Check with ACRP whether you need to pay administrative fees via CITI/University of Miami and the number of hours of CE credit which can be claimed.

CARNA

CITI GCP training can be used to meet the requirement of continuing professional development for College & Association of Registered Nurses of Alberta’s (CARNA) Continuing Competence Program.  Although this program is not based on CE credits, members can choose that learning be completed through CE type activities.  The CITI training will increase your knowledge of research requirements and the importance of GCP in the care of patients on clinical trials.

Continuing competency requirements include:

• Identify the appropriate nursing practice standard indicator
• Implement a learning plan- e.g. a CITI training course
• Evaluate the impact of learning on your practice e.g. how does completing the CITI training impact the way you conduct your day-to-day duties?

Already enrolled into CITI-Canada and want to have your courses applied to another organization?

For individuals who have already taken the CITI-Canada training program and want to share information with another organization, on the main menu choose ‘affiliate with another institution’, then select the new organization. You will need to select each course you wish to share. Note, if the record indicates incomplete, this means that you may need to complete an additional module.
