Overview

Tri-Agency Spring 2025 Competition

This current opportunity seeks high-quality applications from Alberta-based post-secondary academic institutions that have been submitted to Tri-agency competitions and will strengthen Alberta’s Health and Life Sciences ecosystem.

Tri-Agency includes Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council (NSERC), Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC), and Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR), as well as CIHR Institutes.   

This specific funding opportunity supports two project types:

  1. Research: Focused on overcoming health research barriers or advancing the development and commercialization of innovations that enable personalized health. Projects must be led by post-secondary institutions.
  2. Health System Transformation: Focused on early-stage implementation of innovative care models that demonstrate impact across the continuum of care and enable the success of our refocused health system.

Priority will be given to projects that are digital or data-enabled and those aligned with a One Health approach. Universal prevention projects are not eligible.

Objectives of LevMax-Health are to:

  • Accelerate evidence generation for health and life sciences innovation, develop an innovation workforce, and contribute to positioning Alberta as a leader in Health Innovation.
  • Support research and innovation clients in Alberta.
  • Leverage partnerships towards a healthy economy and population in Alberta.

Funding 

The LevMax-Health program will contribute to the project’s original Tri-agency application budget, up to a maximum of $750,000 CAD for a maximum term of 36 months. Final decisions on budget and term are at the sole discretion of Alberta Innovates.

Eligibility

*The LevMax competition is not open to individual scholarship or fellowship applications submitted by graduate students or postdoctoral fellows.*

Projects must: 

  • Align with the objectives of the LevMax-Health Program.
  • Have the Nominated Principal Applicant based in Alberta.
  • Align with at least one of the project types.
  • Have received written scores and peer review comments from a Tri-agency competition from February 1, 2025, to July 31, 2025, but were not funded.

  1. Review and familiarize yourself with the Program Guide
  2. Access, complete, and submit the Application form on SmartSimple, the online application portal.
  3. Upload all supporting documents from the Tri-agency funding program, including:
    1. Original application
    2. Reviewer comments
    3. Reviewer scores
    4. Letter of decision from Tri-agency organization

Evaluation Process

All applications are reviewed and evaluated to determine fit with the LevMax-Health program objectives and intended outcomes. Internal and external reviewers (if required) are engaged to evaluate Applications. Funded projects may be required to provide a graphical abstract if requested by Alberta Innovates.

All investment decisions are at the sole discretion of Alberta Innovates.
