Agriculture is one of Alberta’s historical strengths. Finding new ways to improve is a culture that has always existed in farming and agriculture overall. Alberta Innovates is proud to continue its support for this to keep Alberta agriculture strong.

Smart Ag is one of our five priority areas for economic opportunity in Alberta and we fund technology development, science and applied research that is opening new markets for producers, increasing yields, lowering costs, reducing emissions and creating jobs. As part of this, Alberta Innovates is pleased to be a silver level sponsor for one of the largest agricultural conferences and events in Alberta, AgSmart, happening July 30-31 at Olds College.

Our Agri-Food Innovation programs focus on areas that include sustainability, advancing data and digital technologies, autonomous systems, biotechnology to improve disease resistance, food processing innovation and scientific research into prion diseases affecting animals. Since 2019 Alberta Innovates has provided $17.9 million in funding for agriculture and food research to 67 recipients to support science and technology development. In addition, Alberta Innovates works closely with SVG Thrive, a global business and technology accelerator and venture capital funder focused on agriculture technologies. SVG Thrive is one of five accelerator partners in our Scaleup Growth Accelerator Program.
